The history of
Miles dates back to the mid 1800's when it was
originally named Dogwood Crossing and was
located on the track blazed by the pioneering
explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. It was renamed Miles
in 1878 in honour of the member for Maranoa and
the Minister for Railways at the time, the Hon
William Miles.
The western rail
line from Brisbane to Charleville and Quilpie
opened up Western Queensland. A variety of
quality grain crops and some of Australia's best
livestock are produced in this area.
More recent
times have seen interest in oil, gas and coal
exploration in the area.
